Ebonyi Launches Free Prostate Screening and Surgery for Over 1,000 Men

The Ebonyi State Government in Nigeria has launched a free medical screening, treatment and surgery programme for men suffering from prostate-related conditions, in a move aimed at improving access to healthcare.

The initiative, introduced under Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration, was launched on October 5, 2026, at Ezzamgbo General Hospital in Ohaukwu Local Government Area.

The month-long programme is expected to run until November 5, with more than 1,000 people targeted for screening and treatment.

According to reports, more than 200 people underwent medical screening on the first day of the exercise, showing strong interest among residents seeking affordable healthcare services.

Dr Ifeanyi Edeaja, the hospital’s medical officer and the initiative’s coordinator, said the government had made arrangements to cover the cost of medical tests, treatment and surgery for eligible beneficiaries.

He explained that preliminary tests, which usually cost between ₦50,000 and ₦70,000, would be provided free of charge. Patients requiring specialised prostate surgery, which can cost approximately ₦2 million, would also receive treatment without paying for the covered services.

Eight Surgeries Already Completed

Edeaja disclosed that the hospital had already successfully performed eight prostate surgeries under the programme, with no complications reported.

The initiative has also led to a significant increase in patient attendance at the hospital. Monthly outpatient visits reportedly rose from fewer than 60 to more than 500.

The state government has made provisions for surgery for approximately 50 patients, alongside screening and treatment for other beneficiaries.

Speaking during the programme’s launch, Professor Jesse Uneke, Vice-Chancellor of David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, urged men to prioritise regular medical check-ups.

He said early detection of prostate conditions could help prevent complications and improve treatment outcomes.

The Chairman of Ohaukwu Local Government Area, Eze Paul Ituma, also encouraged men, particularly those aged 40 and above, to take advantage of the free services.

He pledged the local government’s support for the programme and promised to address water supply and sewage challenges affecting the hospital.

The initiative is expected to reduce the financial burden of prostate care and make essential medical services more accessible to residents of Ebonyi State.
